What Is Spam?

Spam is unwanted communication sent in bulk. Usually we receive spam through text messages, email, phone calls or social media, etc. Spam can be very annoying and they very often come from text message or email and most spams are about promotions which are harmless but however their are some spam messages which are fraudulent or malicious scam. While spam is unwanted communication (messages) sent in bulk the once who sent these are known as Spammers, but some messages can also be from genuine good brands but get marked as spam as they also send in Bulk.
Understanding Spam
Spam is primarily driven by profit motives, aiming to deceive, mislead, or exploit users. Spammers employ various tactics to distribute their messages. (Like Bulk email/message sending software)
- Advertising – Promotional Spams are the most common they come in form of messages or email and often promote product or services without any prior consent.
- Phishing – You shall be very careful while clicking on any links or providing any personal information on spams specially because Phishing is where they are attempting to steal personal information through fraudulent emails or messages.
- Malware – These can be very scary as they can destroy your device by spreading malicious software through infected attachments or links.
- Scamming – Scamming is scams as the name suggests where they try to keep convincing people to send money or provide sensitive information under false pretenses, It is very important to be safe and not fall for any such scam and verify the business or a service properly before paying or providing any sensitive information.
What is Spam, Types Of Spam
Spam Emails – Most common types of spam are email spams, they are so many in numbers that once your email is with a spammer it will get so many spam emails and they clog up your inbox and distract you from the emails you actually want to read. Thankfully, most email clients allow you to report, filter, and block most spam emails, unwanted bulk email. It can contain phishing attempts, malware and promotions. It can be categorized as commercial spams, phishing spams, malware spams and also scams sometimes. Best email provider would be my personal favorite and most used G-Mail.
Social Media Spam – Most social media spam contains links to commercial pages, which aim to increase traffic or revenue for a spammer’s website. It contains unwanted content on social media platforms. Includes fake accounts, automated bots, and spam comments. Can be used for spreading misinformation, promoting fraudulent products, or hacking accounts. It is easy to figure out by looking at a profile and checking the number of posts and verify according to yourselves.
SMS Spam (Text Messages) – Spam messages can also take the form of instant messages via popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, Skype, and Snapchat but mostly normal text messages. Can be particularly harmful due to the personal nature of mobile device. Often contains promotional offers, phishing attempts, or fraudulent messages. It is best to block such spam messages and delete them to keep yourself safe.
Spam Voice Calls (Robocalls) – It contains automated calls with recorded messages. Often used for telemarketing, surveys, or scams. Can be extremely annoying and disruptive. Best to block such spam calls and not respond.
Tech Support Spam (Scams) – It usually begins with a phone call and the person on the call pretends to be from some huge company or a IT technician, they try hard to sound and be like someone from legitimate company. They normally 80% of the times try to tell you that something is wrong with your computer and gain remote access to your computer and pretend to fix a problem which never existed. They can also start with some pop-up on a malicious website and sometimes these scammers also run ads to appear on top in search results.

Protecting from Spams
- Be careful of unwanted emails, messages, and calls.
- Avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading attachments which you don’t recognize.
- Use strong, unique passwords for your accounts and never share it with anyone also any unknown website or service provider. Always keep different passwords for different platforms.
- Keep your software, phone and operating system up-to-date. Strictly acknowledge if Google gives any warning for any email or message being spam.
- Enable spam filters on your email and messaging platforms.
- Report spam or scams to the appropriate authorities.
By understanding the different types of spam and implementing preventive measures, you can significantly reduce your exposure to these unwanted and potentially harmful messages.
